Jail Bond issue attempted for a new 12-bed facility, bond issue failed.
1969
Sheriff Office added a Deputy's position, bringing total sworn officers to three
(3).
1977
Sheriff Office added a Deputy's position, bringing total sworn officers to four
(4).
County began buying Deputy's' patrol units, no longer did
Deputies have to provide their own transportation.
Sheriff Office radio system moved from low band to high
band.
Deputies began night patrol.
1980
Sheriff Office hired a secretary.
1981
Old jail remodeled: jail space increased to 12 inmates, Camera's installed in
jail and monitored by the Communication Center Staff.
1986
Jail Inspector lowered housing to 10 inmates.
Communication Center added to south side of jail.
Intoxiliyzer obtained for Sheriff Office to administer
breath samples for intoxicated persons.
1989
Jail Inspector lowered housing to 9 inmates.
1990
Sheriff Office added a Deputy's position, bringing total sworn officers to five
(5).
1993
Three (3) Jailers hired.
1st Computer system added to sheriff office for jail,
civil, and patrol assignments.
1995
K-9 (Buddy) added to force, Reserve Officer Mark Long handler, program ended in
1997.
Sheriff Office added a Deputy's position, bringing total
sworn officers to six (6).
1996
E-911 service established in Harrison County.
New base radio purchased for Communication Center, using
E-911 funds at a cost of $250,000, including radio and computers for mapping.
1997
DARE (Drug Awareness Resistance Education) brought to Harrison County, DARE
program taught at five (5) school districts. Chief Deputy Gerald Matheny
1st DARE Officer.
Sheriff Office began charging inmates $15 a day for
sentenced inmates; money used toward jail improvements.
Sheriff added three (3) Deputy positions, bringing total
sworn officers to nine (9).
Sheriff Office began charging inmates for Doctor and
Dentist calls. Sheriff Office established an agreement with Harrison
County Public Health to provide medical assistance to the jail; saved the county
money in not transporting inmates to the local doctor's office and hospitals for
treatment.
Sheriff Office began seven (7) days, 24-hour patrol
coverage.
Two (2) Jailer positions added, bringing total jailers to
five (5).
Jail Inspector gave the county one (1) year to replace or
close the Harrison County Jail that was built in 1877. Additions had been
made in 1901 and again in 1981.
1st four-wheel-drive (4WD) unit purchased for Sheriff
Office use.
Restraint chair purchased to stop commitments of unruly
inmates.
40 Cal semi-auto Smith and Wesson pistols purchased for
patrol officer's use.
Deputies began carrying ASP's.
Sheriff Office began tobacco compliance checks throughout
Harrison County; money obtained through a grant was used to fund the DARE
program.
1st DARE Golf Tournament began.
1998
Bond issue for new jail approved by 79.34% of the voting public. One of
the highest jail bond issue passage percentage on the first try. Eleven
(11) counties in Iowa had bond issues for new jails - 9 passed, 2 failed.
Land was purchased south of the old jail for the site of
the new jail. Three (3) homes on the lots were sold at public auction and
removed.
Eighteen (18) bed Jail, Sheriff Office, Emergency
Management Agency Office, and Communication Center approved.
1999
Construction began on new jail.
Digital mobile Radio system's purchased for patrol units
from money received through Harrison Roads and Omaha Public Power District.
2000
March 4th: New Jail dedicated by the Masonic Lodge of Logan.
June 19th: Moved into new
jail - 1st day of operation.
New jail uniforms - green/white striped used for inmates;
uniforms purchased with inmate money collected for housing fees.
K-9 dog (Cutter) donated to Sheriff's Office by Brodie
Kennels. Cutter used for evidence recovery, drug traffic, and search
dog. Deputy
Sheriff Brian Heffernan is the K-9 handler.
2001
Sheriff Office began charging incorporated towns fee for patrol coverage; towns
charged approximately $10 per population head.
Federal Drug Grant and Local Endowment Grant obtained to
purchase two (2) in-car video systems.
Jail population moved from eighteen (18) inmates to a
24-bed facility.
40 Cal. Glock weapons purchased for patrol duty.
